Dead Bird Quiz (because I can’t get enough of them!)

22 01 2014

It’s winter, so it’s high season for dead birds. I know this DBQ is coming close on the heels of the last one, but I just can’t help myself.

This quiz has a theme, but I don’t want to reveal it yet. Try your hand at these identifications, and hopefully, the theme will reveal itself. All three birds were found in December, and all by volunteers in the Carolinas.

Bird A, found in December by Stan Rule in North Carolina.

Great, another challenge!, let’s try

Bird A is rather difficult. The shape of the sternum and what’s left of the cranium looks duckish, and it’s rather small. Because of the deep black wings and back with just a little white on the secondaries, my guess will be a male hooded merganser (Mergus cucullatus)
Bird B is easy, the head pattern and the barred underwings are distinctive: A male wood duck (Aix sponsa)
Bird C is a male scaup, but which one? Because of the rather large black tip of the bill and the whitish primaries (as far as they are visible), I think it’s a greater scaup (Aythya marila).

Keep them coming,

Wouter
